For Essential Beliefs – UNITY: “There is one Body and one Spirit…there is one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, and one God and Father of us all…” Ephesians 4:4-6 (NIV)
For Nonessential Beliefs – FREEDOM: “Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters...Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls…so then each of us will give an account of himself to God…So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.” Romans 14:1,4,12,22 (NIV)
And in all things – LOVE: “If I hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but also the very secrets of God, and if I have the faith that can move mountains – but have no love, I amount to nothing at all.” 1 Corinthians 13:2 (NIV)
Having said these things, you need to know these beliefs:
God: God is the eternal, omnipotent, omniscient Creator of all things. He is One eternal being in three persons, Father, Son, and Spirit. His attributes include holiness, justice, righteousness, mercy, love, grace, and many more aspects than we can fathom.
Jesus: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. He is God in the flesh, who lived among us and then died for our sins, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and reigns at the right hand of the Father. We need to teach (as Paul said in 1 Cor 15) His life, death, burial, and resurrection “as of first importance.”
The Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit seems to be a mystery to so many, yet Jesus taught extensively on His ministry in John 14, 15, and 16. He convicts people of their need for Christ. He reminds Christians of the teachings they have heard. He helps us voice our prayers. He guides us on the path toward sanctification.
The Bible: The Bible is the true, inspired Word of God, and is just as relevant today for teaching, correction, and guidance as it was 2000 years ago – a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. (See also 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Salvation: Forgiveness of sin and the promise of eternal life are available to those who trust Christ as Savior and Lord. John 3:16 Forgiveness only comes by grace through our faith in Christ - but contrary to popular views, faith is more than an intellectual exercise, it is an active response (Hebrews 11). Our active response to the Gospel message is to repent of sins, confess our faith, be baptized into Christ, and to walk in faith. Romans 10:9, Acts 2:38
The Church: The church is the body of Christ on earth, empowered by the Holy Spirit and exists to reach the lost and edify the saved. Ephesians 4:1-16. The church has been given a mission to reach the lost and equip the saved for ministry. The church is also the Bride of Christ – He values the Bride so much that He paid the ultimate bride price. Therefore, we should not be spending our time denigrating the church, but building each other up for service and good works.
Eternity: Jesus Christ will one day return and reign forever as King of kings and Lord of lords. Those in Christ will return with Him to eternal glory; those who reject Christ will spend eternity in eternal judgment. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 19,20,and 21. Jesus said to John, “Behold, I am coming again.” I am eager for that return.
Communion: Man seems to have a built-in “forgetter.” The enemy uses that to help us lose track of our relationship with Christ and take Him for granted. Jesus set up the Lord’s Supper as a time for the church to gather together to remember the cost of our salvation – His body and blood - and to unify us in our purpose. I believe in taking Communion each Lord’s Day and at other times the church is gathered when the time of remembrance is appropriate.
I have been involved in located ministries in Indiana, Florida, and Illinois - and I spent time completing my Master of Divinity degree (with a specialty in preaching) from Lincoln Christian Seminary in Lincoln, Illinois. I graduated (with honors) in May of 2009.
I served on the board of the West Africa Christian Mission for five years, and a trip to Nigeria allowed me to preach in two churches in Nigeria and teach a seminar in a Bible College near Lagos, Nigeria. The photo above is from that trip.
I started doing mainly supply preaching, revival preaching, and leadership seminars in August of 2009. Since beginning that ministry, I have had the honor of preaching and/or teaching in churches in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, West Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan, and Wyoming.
I authored a series of Sunday School lessons on Galatians which has been published in the Restoration Herald in February of 2017.
